A York capacitor replacement in Las Vegas typically runs $150 – $280 installed, parts and labor included, and our trucks carry the most common York-compatible dual-run and start capacitors so we can usually finish the job the same day you call. You’ll know this part has failed because the outdoor unit hums but the fan won’t spin, the compressor clicks and gives up, or the whole system shuts down without warning on a 110-degree afternoon. The capacitor is the small cylinder that gives your York’s fan motor and compressor the jolt they need to start and keep running. When it dies, everything stops.
Which York Models This Applies To
York has used similar capacitor designs across its residential lineup for decades, so this applies to most York Affinity, LX Series, and Latitude units built from the mid-2000s onward, along with older Stellar and Champion models that are still cooling plenty of Las Vegas homes. The part you need is usually marked on the side of the existing capacitor itself: a dual-run capacitor is labeled with two microfarad (µF) ratings, something like 45/5 µF or 40/7.5 µF, plus a voltage rating, typically 370V or 440V. The label matters more than the model number because York has shipped the same model line with different capacitor specs depending on the compressor it was paired with. Here’s the gotcha we see regularly in Las Vegas: a 440V capacitor can replace a 370V capacitor safely, but never the other way around, and mismatching the microfarad rating by more than about 5% shortens the life of both the capacitor and the compressor it feeds. On the OEM versus aftermarket question, York’s original capacitors are solid, but quality aftermarket units from brands like AmRad and Titan HD meet or exceed the original spec and often run cooler, which matters when the condenser is sitting on a west-facing wall in Summerlin. We stock both and we’ll match whatever your system needs.

Signs Your York Capacitor Replacement Is Failing
- The outdoor unit hums but the fan doesn’t turn. You’ll hear a low electrical hum from the condenser. The capacitor can’t deliver the starting torque the fan motor needs, so the motor just sits there drawing current and heating up.
- The compressor clicks on, then shuts off within seconds. That’s the compressor trying to start, failing, and tripping its internal overload. Repeated attempts like this are how compressors get damaged permanently.
- The capacitor is swollen, leaking, or bulging at the top. The flat top of the cylinder should be exactly that: flat. A domed or split top means the internal dielectric has broken down and the part is done. In Las Vegas heat, we see capacitors bulge years before they fail completely.
- Your AC runs but the air coming out is warm. If the fan runs but the compressor can’t start because the capacitor is weak, the system circulates air without actually cooling it.
- The system shut down overnight and won’t restart. Capacitors often fail when they’re stressed, and the cool-down and start-up cycle is a common failure point. If your York won’t wake up in the morning, the capacitor is the first thing we check.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Las Vegas, a York capacitor replacement runs $150 – $280 installed, and the range comes down to two things: whether you need a single-run or dual-run capacitor, and whether it’s a standard or heavy-duty high-temperature unit. The part itself is inexpensive compared to the labor and the fact that we’re on your doorstep. You’ll get a written price before any tool comes out, and that price includes the part, the installation, testing the new capacitor under load, and verifying the fan motor and compressor are drawing the right amperage afterward. We don’t hand you a quote and then rediscover a problem at the door. The whole repair is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the new capacitor fails within a year, we come back and replace it at no charge. No arguing, no prorated nonsense.
DIY or Call Us?
Here’s the honest version: a capacitor stores a charge even when the power is off. That’s the whole point of the part. If you don’t discharge it properly, it can knock you on your back, burn you, or worse. We don’t recommend opening the condenser and handling a capacitor yourself, and that’s not us padding the bill. It’s genuine, simple electrical safety. What you can do safely is listen: if the unit hums and won’t start, shut the system off at the thermostat and give us a call. Don’t keep resetting it and forcing the compressor to try, because a hard-start condition repeated enough times turns a $200 capacitor job into a compressor replacement that runs into the thousands. Victor Mancini has seen that exact sequence too many times in this town. Make the call at (725) 726-3813 and we’ll be out with the part on the truck.
FAQs
A York capacitor typically lasts 5 to 10 years, but in Las Vegas the failure window trends toward the shorter end because 110-plus degree summer days and overnight temperature swings stress the internal dielectric constantly. If your system runs hard from May through September, expect to replace a capacitor roughly twice over the life of the condenser. Call (725) 726-3813 if yours is acting up, and we’ll test it in place before recommending anything.
No. A capacitor is a sealed, non-serviceable component, and once the internal insulation breaks down or the casing bulges, the only fix is a new one. Anyone who says they can rebuild a residential capacitor is selling you a used part with someone else’s failure history baked in.
The swap itself takes 20 to 40 minutes once we’re on site. That includes removing the old capacitor, confirming the replacement matches the label specs, installing it, and testing the system under load. You’ll be back in cool air the same day in most cases.
Yes. Our trucks carry the common York dual-run and single-run capacitor sizes, including 370V and 440V in the microfarad ratings we see most often across Las Vegas. For less common specs we can usually have the part by the next morning. We also stock compatible Carrier, Trane, and Lennox parts, so if your capacitor took something else down with it, we’re already prepared.
If your York is humming, clicking, or just sitting there dead while the house climbs to 90 degrees indoors, call us at (725) 726-3813. You’ll get a live person, an honest written price, and a repair that’s covered in writing for a full year. Tell me what it’s doing, and I’ll tell you what it costs – no guesswork, no runaround.
